How to

Register as a jobseeker

Register as a jobseeker if your goal is to find work and you want to do activities, alone or together with Nav, to achieve this. Once you have registered as a job seeker, you may receive information about available positions that are relevant to you.

Who can register?

You have the right to register as a jobseeker if you reside legally in Norway. If you are under 18 years old, you must have parental consent to register as a job seeker.

Once you have registered, you are entitled to have Nav assess
your need for guidance with the aim of returning to work.

You can apply for unemployment benefits or other benefits once you have
registered as a jobseeker.

Occupational follow-up

You can also receive occupational follow-up without registering as a job seeker.

This may be relevant if

  • you are a student and need accommodations to complete your education
  • you do not intend to apply for financial benefits from Nav that require registration as a job seeker
  • you need support to start or remain in employment but are not ready for actively searching for jobs

Are you uncertain about what would be most appropriate for your situation?

Are you unsure whether you should register as a job seeker, or whether you should only request occupational follow-up?

Answer a few short questions and receive a recommendation based on your situation.

We will evaluate the information you have given us against the
information we have about other jobseekers who are in a similar situation
as you. Based on this, automatic suggestions are compiled about which
services we think may suit you. A Nav counsellor will review these
suggestions and send you a decision.

If changes occur that mean the information you have given us is no longer
correct, please contact us online at nav.no. We will then re-assess your
need for services.

If you disagree with Nav's assessment of the need for follow-up, you can
respond to us by logging on to nav.no.
