How to get occupational follow-up

When you contact Nav for help finding a job or keeping the job you have, you are entitled to an assessment of your job opportunities and of the types of help and support that can be relevant for you.

What is occupational follow-up?

Everyone who registers as a job seeker will be assessed to see if they need occupational follow-up. You can also receive occupational follow-up from Nav even if you do not register as a job seeker. Nav will then assess your need for follow-up in accordance with Section 14a of the Nav Act.

We can help with

  • assessment of your capacity for work 

  • information about opportunities and adaptation 

  • advice and guidance to keep a job 

  • employment schemes or training courses 

  • you will be assigned a Nav counsellor 

The services you get is tailored to your situation and may change if your needs change.

Who can get occupational follow-up from Nav?

You should ask for occupational follow-up if you need help finding or keeping a job, but are not applying for new jobs right now 

This applies to you if you: 

  • are a student and you need adaptation in order to complete your education 
  • are not applying for any form financial support from Nav that requires you to register as a job seeker 
  • need help finding or keeping a job, but you are not ready to register as a job seeker 

Your health does not have to be affected to get occupational follow-up.

When should you not ask for occupational follow-up?

If you are actively seeking a job, you should instead register as a job seeker. This is especially relevant if: 

  • You may be entitled to financial support that requires you to register as a job seeker, e.g. unemployment benefit (link to unemployment benefit page) 
  • You have been laid off 
  • You are able to accept employment on short notice 
  • You want Nav to be able to match you with job vacancies

How to ask for occupational follow-up from Nav

To determin whether you can get work-oriented follow-up and to ensure that you receive support from the correct Nav office, we retrieve the following information from the National Population Register:

  • your age
  • your address
  • whether you have legal residence in Norway

You must have an electronic ID to register. You can log in using Bank ID,
Buypass or Commifides.

In ID-porten, you can obtain an electronic ID. You can choose between BankId, Buypass eller Commfides.

If you are not able to obtain an electronic ID, you have to register at your local Nav office.

What happens when I have requested occupational follow-up from Nav?

Nav will contact you to get to know you better and establish a dialogue on how to proceed. 

When Nav has assesed your needs, you will receive a decision from us. This is called a follow-up decision in accordance with Section 14a of the Nav Act.The decision will specify what the guidance and follow-up that you are entitled to from Nav entails. 

Your counsellor will follow up on your activities plan, and you can communicate via digital dialogue, or talk via telephone or video or at the Nav office. 

If your circumstances change, and the information you gave us is no longer correct, please contactus at nav.no. We will reassess your need for our services.
