This year's social security settlement and adjustment rates will be decided by the Storting towards the end of May.
Nav will not have information on the new rates before this time.
For most recipients, pensions will be paid out with the updated amount in June, including a retroactive adjustment from May.
From 1 January there are new rules for the social security supplement in the retirement pension for those born 1954-62, who have had disability insurance and have reached the age of 67. If this applies to you, you will be notified by Nav.
You will receive arrears of the social security supplement for January and February 2025. It is usually paid within seven working days. From March, most people will receive the monthly supplement together with the retirement pension.
Log in to the payment overview to get information from Nav and the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (Statens pensjonskasse):
- future payments approx. ten days before the payment date
- last payments
- tax withholding and other deductions

The time of day when the payment will be credited to your account will vary, as it is your bank that transfers the payment into your account. Payments can therefore arrive in your account in the afternoon or evening.
Hvis du får utbetalt pensjon til konto i utlandet, kan utbetalingene være noen dager forsinket.
There is no holiday pay on this benefit.
Apply for a new tax card as a pensioner
The tax rules for pensions are not the same as for regular income. To get the correct tax deduction, you should apply for a new tax card when you start withdrawing your pension
Log in to change your tax card at the Norwegian Tax Administration. You should enter your pension in the field "Pension from Nav". You can get a 30 percent tax deduction if the deduction code on your tax card is incorrect. Remember to check whether you need to amend your tax card if you change your pension or income. Nav will automatically obtain your tax card from the Tax Administration.
At the Tax Administration you can also read about tax rules for pensioners.
Supplementary, voluntary tax deductions
Log in to Din Pensjon (in Norwegian) if you wish to make supplementary, voluntary tax deductions. The new tax deductions will apply from the month after you have notified us.
Payments in January are normally lower than payments made in December, as no tax is deducted in December.
Do you intend to draw your pension from age 62 and work at the same time?
If your income increases, you must contact the Tax Administration to amend your tax card. Nav will receive the new tax card from the Tax Administration.
Check or change bank account number
When you receive a pension from Nav, it is important that you check to make sure the bank account number registered with us is correct. Log in to nav.no to check or change your bank account number.
Active retirement pension payments are adjusted every spring by the average of price and wage inflation.
You will see the new amount on your payment for June. Along with the payment for June, you will also receive back pay for the increase for May if you had a pension payment in May.
Do you work whilst taking out your retirement pension?
See what happens to pension accrual and payment if you work while you have a retirement pension from Nav.
At Din pensjon (in Nowegian) you can see how your pension is calculated.
Changes in amounts after the last change in regulations can, for example, be due to the annual pension adjustment.
Change the percentage of pension you will draw.
At Din pensjon (in Norwegian) you can change the percentage of pension you draw. You can also stop and re-start payments.
If you stop your pension, the amount you draw is thus 0 percent. If you wish to begin drawing your pension again, you must apply to change the draw grade.
If you choose a draw grade lower than 100 percent, you must make sure that you change to 100 percent again no later than the last month before you wish to receive full payment. This also applies when you reach the age of 67.
- If you have accrued sufficient pension, you can take out a full pension (100 percent) at any time.
- You can stop your pension (0 percent) at any time.
- If you wish to make any changes, 1 year must pass between each change.
- If you have taken out a full retirement pension or the pension is set at 0 percent, one year must pass before you can change to a graduated pension. You can change to a 20, 40, 50, 60 or 80 percent graduated pension draw.
- If you choose a pension draw of less than 100 percent, you must make sure that you change this to 100 percent again no later than the month before you wish to receive full payment. This also applies when you reach the age of 67.
Supplement paid to surviving spouse, cohabitant or registered partner
You may be entitled to a higher retirement pension if your spouse, cohabitant or registered partner dies. This is called survivor’s rights.
If your spouse, cohabitant or registered partner dies, the deceased person’s payments from Nav will cease. Pensions and disability benefit from the National Insurance Scheme is paid through the month the person died.
Procedure for deaths
This is normally the procedure for those who already receive retirement pension when their spouse, cohabitant or registered partner dies:
- Nav normally receives notice of the death through our electronic system exchange with the National Population Register.
- Once the death is registered by Nav, a letter will automatically be sent to you with information about what your pension will be from that point onwards. This is because your pension will have changed due to your status as single.
- When you receive this letter, we have not yet determined whether or not you have survivor’s rights in relation to your retirement pension.
- You will therefore receive a new letter from us after a few days. This letter will include updated information about your pension from Nav.
Other benefits from Nav, except for supplementary benefit, will not be affected by the changes in your retirement pension.
If the deceased received an occupational pension, you must contact the pension scheme owner for more information.
Deaths abroad
When a death occurs abroad, you should contact Nav at tel. 55 55 33 34 as soon as possible, to ensure that the deceased person’s pension payment is stopped in time, to prevent the next of kin from having to reimburse Nav for incorrect pension payments.
Combine working and receiving a retirement pension
You can work as much as you like whilst drawing your retirement pension and/or contractual pension (AFP scheme) at the same time.
You can work as much as you like whilst taking out your retirement pension from the national insurance scheme and/or AFP in the private sector at the same time. You can draw a full retirement pension or a reduced percentage of your pension and save the remainder for later.
Read the regulations about how you can combine working and drawing retirement pension.
You can work as much as you like whilst receiving a contractual pension (AFP scheme) from a public pension scheme. It is important that you notify us about what you expect to earn:
- If you are under 65 years of age and have AFP paid via Nav, you must notify Nav about your income.
- If you are over 65 years of age and have any enquiries regarding income in addition to AFP in the public sector, you must contact your pension scheme.
AFP in the public sector will be reduced when you earn more than the so-called «tolerance threshold».
Read more about combining AFP and work (in Norwegian)
You can work whilst drawing retirement pension at the same time. Your work income up to and including the year you become 75 years old can accrue a higher pension. Each year of accrual can give you an extra year of pension points, higher income pension and one extra year of national insurance service.
In late November/early December you will receive a letter from Nav if the new accrual gives you a higher pension from the following year.
You will automatically receive a higher retirement pension from 1 January if:
- You have 100 percent retirement pension and the Tax Administration has approved your income for the previous year.
- You have a graduated amount of retirement pension, were born in 1954 or later and new accrual is significant to your guaranteed pension.
If you have a graduated draw of retirement pension and the new income does not change your guaranteed pension, the new accrual will be added to your pension reserves. This accrual will be included when you apply to draw a larger proportion of your pension. If you would like the new accrual to be included in the part of the pension that you are already drawing, you can apply for this at Din Pensjon (in Norwegian).
How can you see that the new income is included in your pension?
At Your pension (service in Norwegian) you will find an overview of your incomes, in the last decision from Nav regarding your retirement pension. At Din pensjonsopptjening (in Norwegian) you can see additional details about your pension accrual in the National Insurance Scheme.
If you work, you may be entitled to sickness benefit even if you have drawn retirement pension and private sector AFP.
If you are between the ages of 67 and 70, you may be entitled to sickness benefit for up to 60 days if your income exceeds NOK 248,056 (twice the National Insurance basic amount (G)).
The 60-day rule applies from the day after you turn 67 to the day before you turn 70.
If you have turned 70, you are not entitled to sickness benefit.
If you combine employment with retirement pension, lose your job and register as a job seeker, you may be entitled to unemployment benefit. You can receive unemployment benefit and draw retirement pension at the same time. You can receive unemployment benefit until you turn 67.
New life situation
Retirement home/care home or sheltered housing
Are you, your spouse, cohabiting partner or partner moving to a municipal retirement home/care home or sheltered housing? In such case, you can receive a retirement pension calculated as a single retiree. The municipality will report this to Nav.
If you have received a place in a retirement home/care home, you will pay a contribution deduction to the municipality. The municipality will ensure that the payment is deducted from your pension. Contact your municipality if you have any questions regarding this payment.
Somatic hospital
If you are admitted to a somatic hospital, you will retain your entire pension payment. Somatic hospitals treat «bodily» illnesses, in contrast to psychiatric institutions.
Psychiatric institutions
From and including the fourth month after admission, your retirement pension will be reduced to 14 percent of the original retirement pension. However, there is a minimum guarantee, which means that you will receive a minimum of 22.5 percent of the minimum pension level at the higher rate/guaranteed pension high rate.
If you are providing for a spouse or children, you will retain full retirement pension.
If you have regular and necessary expenses for accommodation, you can request that Nav evaluate whether you can retain the entire or a larger part of your retirement pension. In such case you must send documentation to Nav Family and Pensions Office, PB 6600 Etterstad, 0607 OSLO.
When you are discharged from the institution, your retirement pension will be paid out at the normal rate.
Prison
If you are serving a prison sentence, you will receive a retirement pension in the month you go to prison, and in the following month. Thereafter payments of retirement pension will stop.
If you provide for children, you will, however, receive 50 percent of your retirement pension. If you provide for a spouse, you will not have the right to receive retirement pension whilst you are in prison.
Payments will be reinstated in the month after your release from prison.
If you are not serving a sentence in a prison but are allowed to remain at home whilst the sanction is served, your retirement pension will not be reduced. This applies, for example, while carrying out community service, serving a suspended sentence or whilst on parole.
If you have AFP in the public or private sector, you will retain payments whilst you are in prison.
Your marital status affects how much pension you are paid. For example, if you get married, separated or divorced, you must report this us.
You must also notify us if you become a cohabitee, or if you cease cohabiting. You can notify us by logging in to Din pensjon or by reporting to us.
What is considered equivalent to a spouse?
- Cohabitees who have previously been married to each other and/or have had joint children are considered equivalent to spouses regarding pensions from the National Insurance Scheme.
- Persons of the same gender who have entered into a registered partnership, are equivalent to spouses.
- Cohabitees who have not been previously married to each other and do not have joint children will receive a reduced basic pension as if they were married. This is provided that the persons have been cohabiting for a minimum of 12 of the last 18 months.
A spouse’s, cohabitants or partner’s income can affect your pension. In your pension decision you can see which information has been applied. If your income is different to that provided when you applied for a pension, you must report the change to us.
If your spouse, cohabitant or partner dies, payments received by the deceased from Nav will cease.
If the deceased received an occupational pension, you may have the right to back payment of the pension. Contact the pension scheme to find out what applies in your particular case.
If you are planning to move to a foreign country
You can normally keep your retirement pension if you move abroad.
Are you planning to stay more than 12 months in a foreign country? Or will you alternate between staying in Norway and a foreign country? In such case, it is important that you find out how this will affect your pension and your right to use health services in Norway and overseas.
If you move back to Norway, your pension will be updated to the correct level when you report a change of address.
Here are the regulations when you receive a Norwegian pension in a foreign country.
Norwegian national insurance authorities use a life certificate when they check persons who receive a pension and live in a foreign country. If we require a life certificate from you, you will receive a letter with a life certificate from us. The letter will be sent digitally if you use Norwegian BankID, or by regular post if you cannot log onto our website.
Your pension will be paid as normal when you reside in a foreign country.
If you move back to Norway, your pension will be updated to the correct level when you report a change of address.
If you have lived or worked in countries other than Norway, you can have the right to receive a pension from these. Here you can read about the regulations for those who live in Norway and are applying for a pension from a foreign country.
If you need to provide a life certificate to a country other than Norway, you can receive help in obtaining a certified signature and confirmation from the Oslo City Court or District Court.
