Use of Translation Tools in Nav – Breach of Personal Data Security
Published 13. March 2026 | Updated 13. March 2026
If you have submitted documents in languages other than Norwegian to Nav in connection with an application for a benefit or service, Nav may have used digital translation tools to translate them. This also applies if you have contacted a Nav office using a language other than Norwegian.
The translation tools Nav have used are publicly available on the internet. Nav has not entered into agreements for the use of such tools that would safeguard your privacy (data processing agreements). Therefore, there may be a risk that your personal data has not been processed in a secure and lawful manner. Nav considers this a breach of data protection regulations. Nav takes the matter seriously and has notified the Norwegian Data Protection Authority.
You do not need to take any action. This matter has no consequences for your benefits.
We express our sincere regret that this situation has occurred, and we have discontinued the use of these translation tools.
If you send documents to Nav in languages other than Norwegian, Nav may still need to translate them using digital translation tools. To protect your privacy, we now use only tools from suppliers with whom we have valid agreements. Nav may also use professional translators and interpreters.
