Unemployed - what now?

It is important that you get an overview of the job market and start applying for vacant positions, as quickly as possible.

Start your job search immediately

If you are flexible about type of job and where you work, your chance of quickly getting a job increases. Go to job search.

Applying for unemployment benefits

Register at nav.no. You will then become available when employers search our database for eligible candidates, and your profile will be matched against vacancies in NAVs database of vacant positions.

Once you have registered as a job seeker you can apply for unemployment benefits. To receive unemployment benefits, you must be registered as unemployed and actively apply for jobs. You must also send a notification card every 14 days at nav.no.

If you have been offered employment outside your home town or county, you can under some conditions apply for travel and moving benefits  (supplemental benefits).

Follow-up from NAV

After you have registered as a job seeker, NAV will assess your chances of finding work and your need for assistance to quickly find a job.

Most of the main information about your entitlements and duties is available here in English. There are also links to other more detailed information; however, some of this information is only available in Norwegian.
