We have agreements with a number of guidance counsellors who can provide the support you need in a transitional period.

The measures are tailored to your needs and based on your options on the labour market, and may include:

  • Activities to improve your motivation and ability to tackle problems
  • Individualised training programme and guidance
  • Work testing in safe surroundings
  • Involvement in the labour market
  • Lifestyle guidance

This measure may be applicable to those who are on sick leave and/or whose work capability has been impaired in ways that prevent them from gaining or keeping a job. The Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) collaborate with you in evaluating whether this is a measure you need.

When you are employed

If you are employed (if you are on sick leave, for example) the occupational rehabilitation must be related to your job. If it is impossible for you to return to you current job, the occupational rehabilitation must aim to enable you to transition to another type of job. Prior to your starting occupational rehabilitation measures, the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) must have received a follow-up plan in which your employer documents that the company has tried or evaluated measures to enable you to return to work, and that they have found that these cannot be implemented.

When you are unemployed

If you are unemployed, the occupational rehabilitation will take place in the offices of the rehabilitation provider or in an ordinary business with assistance from the organiser of the rehabilitation. You will receive guidance and help in assessing your options for finding suitable employment.

Duration of occupational rehabilitation measures

The duration of the daytime service must be tailored to individual needs, up to a maximum of 12 weeks.

If you receive benefits to cover your day to day expenses (such as sickness benefits or a work assessment allowance), you will continue to receive these benefits while participating in occupational rehabilitation measures. If you do not receive any of these benefits, you may be entitled to Stønad ved tiltak ("support when participating in measures"), which are to cover your day to day expenses while you participate in rehabilitation measures.

How do you receive an offer of occupational rehabilitation services?

Contact your local NAV office. You, your employer or the medical professional who issued the medical certificate for your sickness leave, can suggest occupational rehabilitation, but the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) makes the final decision and refers participants to rehabilitation measures.  If you are on sick leave, the medical professional who issued your medical certificate must be notified of the referral.
