Compulsory education in Norway begins at age six and consists of primary and lower secondary education over ten years.
Everyone between the ages of 16 and 19 also has a statutory right to three years’ upper secondary education, leading either to higher education or to vocational qualifications. There are also some international primary and secondary schools in Norway which offer classes in various languages. Contact the municipality you will be living in for more information and for addresses of schools (see the related information on the right).
Public education is free up to and including upper secondary schooling. Tuition at state-run institutions for higher education is usually minimal. Other kinds of educational institutions in Norway include independent private schools. They are a supplement to the public school system, but often require tuition fees. Many of these offer international education.
