The purpose of advice and guidance is not just to solve current problems, but also to prevent problems from occurring.

You do not have to be experiencing difficulties in order to get advice and guidance at the NAV office, but we are better able to help you find alternatives to financial assistance if you are. If your local NAV office cannot provide the advice and guidance you need, they must, to the extent possible, ensure that others in your municipality provide the advice and guidance. All public agencies are required to provide information, advice and guidance about their services. The Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) additionally have an expanded obligation to provide information, advice and guidance that extend beyond our own services.

Who can get advice and guidance?

Generally, you must contact your local office of the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) in order to get advice and guidance. When you contact your local office, they will start implementing measures to find out what your needs are.

In some cases, the NAV office provides information, advice and guidance on its own initiate in order to solve or prevent social problems.

What sort of help is available?

The NAV office provides information about your rights as well as guidance in related to the rules and common practices for our services.

Examples of what you can information about and assistance with:

• information about case processing rules, appeals and processing times
• assistance in filling in applications
• information about other benefits you may be entitled to
• information about housing (available rentals, contracts, rules for national and municipal housing benefits)
• information about vacancies and job searching advice
• information about nurseries and schools
• family advising
• referrals and information related to health problems
• i nformation about financial advising
• advice and guidance for drug addicts and their next of kin

Though the NAV office does not have expertise in all areas, they will be able to help and if necessary make referrals for you.

Duty of confidentiality

Advisors and case workers at the NAV office have a duty of confidentiality.

If it is difficult to present your case and receive advice at the front desk, you can ask for advising to take place in another appropriate location.
