When both mother and father are entitled to parental benefit
When both mother and father are entitled to parental benefit (having worked 6 of the last 10 months), the benefit period is 44 weeks at 100% cover and 54 weeks at 80 % cover. The benefit period starts no later than 3 weeks before the term. If these weeks are not expended or the birth is premature, the benefit period will be shortened correspondingly. The weeks prior to birth may not be transferred to the period following birth. The benefit period may start up to 12 weeks before the term but the benefit period after birth will be shortened accordingly.
Certain weeks of the benefit period are reserved for the mother and certain weeks are reserved for the father. Parents may share those weeks that are not allocated to mother or father. If the mother’s percentage position prior to birth was 50% or more:
If the mother’s percentage position prior to birth was lower than 50%
When only the mother is entitled to parental benefit
When the parents are living together but only the mother has worked 6 of the last 10 months before the birth, the benefit period is 44 weeks at 100 % cover and 54 weeks at 80 % cover. The mother alone is entitled to the whole benefit period, unless the father has worked 6 of the last 10 months before his benefit period starts.
When only the father is entitled to parental benefit
When the parents are living together but only the father has worked for 6 of the last 10 months before the birth the benefit period is 29 weeks at 100 % cover and 39 weeks at
80 % cover. Weeks reserved for the mother (3 weeks prior and 6 weeks after the birth) and the paternal quota (6 weeks) are deducted. There are special requirements for the mother when the father will be drawing parental benefit that is not paternal quota , see below. The mother may be entitled to lump sum benefit.
When the mother has sole care of the child
When the mother has worked 6 of the last 10 months before the birth and lives alone with the child, the benefit period is 44 weeks at 100 % cover and 54 weeks at 80 % cover. The mother alone is entitled to the whole benefit period. There is no paternal quota.
When the father has sole care of the child
When the father has worked 6 of the last 10 months before the birth and lives alone with the child, the benefit period is 41 weeks at 100 % cover and 51 weeks at 80 % cover. 3 weeks reserved for the mother prior to birth are deducted.
Multiple births
Special requirements for the mother when the father will be drawing parental benefit
When the father will be drawing parental benefit that is not paternal quota , it will be a condition that the mother:
If following the birth, the mother is working no less than 75% of full-time, the father may receive parental benefit on the basis that the mother is working full-time. If the mother works less than 75% of full-time, the father’s parental benefit will be reduced in accordance with the reduction in the mother’s working hours.
If the father wishes to work full time in order to defer the period, the mother also has to work or study full time. This applies even if the mother does not have a right to parental benefit.
Changes in your income, family situation and/or work situation may affect the payment you receive from the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration. Stays abroad may also affect your payment. You must therefore immediately report any such changes to your local NAV office.
