This page provides a summary of what you should do when you are working on the Norwegian continental shelf.
All those working on the Norwegian continental shelf are compulsory members of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme.
If you are posted to work on the Norwegian continental shelf for less than 12 months by another employer in an EEA-country
or Switzerland, you are exempted from national insurance.
In order to be exempted from Norwegian National insurance, the social security authorities in the employing country must issue form E101 confirming that you are a member of the social security scheme there. You must send the form to NAV Madla Trygd.
In order to be registered with the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme, you must send an application form to NAV National Office for Social Insurance Abroad.
You are a member of both the health and pension sections. This entitles you to health services and will add to your insurance period as well as your pension earning period, both in importance when calculating your future pension.
Send your application to NAV National Office for Social Insurance Abroad. You will receive a letter stating when you can expect your case to be resolved.
The time it takes to process a case may vary. At present it is nine weeks.

You have to hand in the form E 106 to the social security authorities in the country of your residence so that they can register you as entitled to health services. Confirmation of this registration must be sent back to NAV National Office for Social Insurance Abroad.
Should you be working for less than 12 months while residing in an EEA-country or Switzerland, you will not receive the E 106 form. Instead, if you fall sick, you can use the health insurance card.
If you pay taxes to Norway, your national insurance contributions will be paid together with them. Persons not liable for taxation to Norway must pay their contributions to the Central Office - Foreign Tax Affairs. Your employer will deduct contributions from your pay.
Family members do not become members of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme. When you live in an EEA-country or Switzerland, the social security authorities there will assess whether to enter family members onto your E 106 form thus entitling them to health services according to the regulations of the country of residence.
If another person has to have details of your case or must fill in the application for you, you must send a power of attorney giving that person the authority to act on your behalf. You can send the power of attorney with the application, or when required.
