Who can get benefits for previous family carers?

There are detailed requirements for membership of the National Insurance Scheme for both the person being nursed and the family carer.

The care and nursing must be finished and have

• Been essential 
• Lasted for at least 5 years
• Made it impossible for you to work and sustain yourself during the period of care
• Led to your inability to sustain yourself through your own work once the period of care was over

Benefits can be granted following a complete means testing of your assets and income.

The benefits in question are:

• Pension or transitional benefit
• Educational benefit
• Removal grant to take up work

How do you apply?

If you would like an application form to apply for benefit for previous family carers, you can approach your NAV Local Services or use the application form here. The form contains information and guidance.  It is important that you read this before completing the form.  If you need help to complete it, you can contact NAV Local Services.

The application form should be sent to NAV Pensjon, Postboks 6600 Etterstad, 0607 Oslo.

You can get a quicker response if you obtain the necessary documentary evidence yourself, for example, details of your income and assets.

What can you get?

The pension consists of basic pension and special supplement.  The size of the pension/transitional benefit depends on the time you have been a member of the National Insurance Scheme.  The pension will be reduced if you have, or can expect to have, your own income from employment.

Persons coming to Norway

Benefits for family carers can only be granted to persons who have cared for a person close to them who was a member of the National Insurance Scheme and resident in Norway.

Report changes

Changes in your income, family situation and/or work situation may affect the payment you receive from the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration. Stays abroad may also affect your payment.  You must therefore immediately report any such changes to your local NAV office.
